Making a difference

The Ditto Hanger was designed in 2006 as an 100% ecological solution to replace the estimated 20 billion plastic retail hangers which go into landfills every year. Ditto’s designers reverse engineered the Ditto Hanger to be 100% recyclable with cardboard shipping boxes at both the retail location and consumer’s curbside recycling. Ditto only works with certified factories and materials to make sure our Ditto Hanger is the most ecological and socially responsible hanger in the world.

Why Paper?

Our engineers spent 2.5 years in R&D working a wide range of materials, testing how they worked in Distribution Centers, retail stores, shipping programs and recycling programs. The result was the Ditto Hanger, made from 100% recycled paper fiberboard. The hangers are flat and ship more efficiently, saving up to 20% in shipping garments on hangers. Ditto Hangers are designed to fit up to 40% more clothing on retail display rods. And the Ditto Hanger is recyclable with cardboard shipping cartons. And for customers that ask to take the Ditto Hanger home, it’s 100% recyclable in their curbside recycling programs.

Why do 20 Billion Plastic Hangers go into Landfills Every Year?

Very large retailers ship their apparel from overseas manufacturers to stores already on their own plastic hanger. It’s faster to hang in stores and saves retailers millions of dollars in labor costs. So once you buy a shirt or dress, if you don’t take home the hanger, into a box under the counter it goes. At the end of the day that box goes into the dumpster and out to the landfill where it sits for over 1000 years. An estimated 85% of virgin plastic hangers are thrown away, or around 20 billion hangers, enough to fill 11.5 Empire State Buildings.

Aren’t Plastic Hangers Recyclable?

In reality: no.

  • Multiple Materials
(metal hooks, different plastic types, nonslip vinyl and rubber pads, clips, foam, paper, fabric) make the hanger a tangled web of materials most recycling centers can't separate or process.
  • Unrecognizable Plastic
The plastic used can be one of seven different types of plastic. Separating k-resin from the polystyrene No. 6 is impossible in MIRFs. Most hangers are banned in recycling programs.
  • Recycled Plastic
A growing trend is to make GOH hangers out of recycled plastic, which makes the hangers less valued for recycling.
  • Low-Grade Plastic
Plastic GOH hangers are made all over the world and use different materials and are often unmarked making identification impossible.

Aren’t Plastic Hangers Reusable or Resaleable?

The sheer volume of plastic hangers flowing through major retail stores make a secondary market in plastic hangers unrealistic. At one major flagship store we reviewed as many as 30,000 hangers are thrown out—every day!
